$4.3 million grant announced to help return passenger rail service to Harrison County
U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), and Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-Miss.) on Thursday applauded the award of more than $21 million for infrastructure improvements to Mississippi bridges and operating assistance for passenger rail.
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao officially announced the grants Thursday during her remarks at the Coastal Region Transportation Summit in Biloxi. Chao announced a $4.3 million Restoration and Enhancement grant for the Southern Rail Commission to support the return of passenger rail service from New Orleans, La., to Mobile, Ala.
"This is great news for Harrison County and South Mississippi," Harrison County District 5 Supervisor Connie Rockco said. "I would like to thank Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, Sen. Roger Wicker, Rep. Steven Palazzo and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao in helping us get one step closer to once again having passenger rail service in Harrison County."
The remaining grant funds will be used for bridge repairs in several Mississippi counties.
